Nova Scotia Road-tripping
As a child, one of my fondest memories is hopping in a big, old station wagon with Mom and Dad, my three sisters and two brothers on a sunshiny afternoon and going for a “Sunday” drive – back-road adventuring in my Nova Scotia home.
I almost always got car sick, yeah – lucky me, but I still loved our weekend adventures. I never knew where we would end up. Mom usually had the car pre-packed so I never knew what was in store. A day at the beach, a game of tag in an open field, a picnic in the park (or a parking lot, if we couldn’t find a park), or a local festival or attraction.
The anticipation of the unknown was always exciting but singing silly songs and playing car games (check out our game and song section for some great road trip activities) on the way was just as much, if not more, fun than the final destination.
Carrying on the Nova Scotia Road-trip Tradition
When my girls were young we carried on the tradition, going on adventures into the unknown. We would leave the house and at every crossroad or turn would ask one of the girls to choose a direction. We have been lost a few time – OK, many times and have found that some Nova Scotia country roads become four-wheeler trails and winding paths with little or no warning, but oh, the sites we’ve seen!
We have found some of the most amazing places and people on these journeys, many we may never have known if we had stuck to the beaten path. Over the years we have been on almost every back road and in almost every nook and cranny in Nova Scotia, what an adventure!
In the posts linked below I will share with you some of the attractions, beaches, stores, museums, farms and activities we have found and hope that you can follow our footsteps and see Nova Scotia not only through tourist magazines and large corporate attractions but find some of the wonderful, unadvertised treasures our province holds!
